Before Apple launched the iPhone, four powerful companies already dominated the smartphone market: BlackBerry, Nokia, Motorola and Palm.
They had millions of customers, established brands, years of experience and huge resources. From the outside, it would have been easy to believe that the market was already taken and there was no room for another competitor.
Apple entered anyway.
Apple wasn’t the first company to make a smartphone. It simply looked at what already existed, recognised what was missing and created a completely different experience. It didn’t just compete with the biggest companies it transformed the entire industry and left many of the former market leaders behind.
That is a powerful lesson for every entrepreneur.
If you believe the big companies already operating in your industry mean there is no opportunity left, you are wrong. Their size does not make them unbeatable. A large company can have millions of users and still fail to understand what customers will want next.
You don’t always need to invent a completely new market. Sometimes, the greatest opportunity is hiding inside an existing market that has stopped evolving.
Study what the leaders are doing. Identify what they are missing. Build something simpler, smarter and more valuable and have the conviction to continue when others tell you it has already been done.
Being first does not guarantee that you will remain the best. What matters is who understands the future before everyone else does.
This is also how I see my journey with Vrool. There are already major fashion marketplaces, but that doesn’t mean the journey is over or that the market cannot be improved. Vrool is being built as more than a platform for listing and selling clothes. It combines a fashion marketplace with a social fashion network, AI-powered listings, fashion discovery, virtual try-on technology and genuine community.
The existence of large competitors doesn’t discourage me. It proves that the market exists.
The real question is not whether somebody has already done it. The real question is: can you understand what they are missing, create something better and give people a compelling reason to choose your version? My answer is yes.
