Clothing care labels explained: check the whole label before washing

Before washing a newly bought or preloved garment, find the care label and read all of it. A cotton-looking outer fabric does not reveal how its lining, print, trim or construction should be treated. Take a clear photo of the label if the lettering is becoming difficult to read.

GINETEX's care-symbol guide explains the different treatments. The number in a wash-tub symbol is a maximum temperature; bars underneath indicate a gentler process. Drying, bleaching, ironing and professional care have their own instructions. Read accompanying words as well as symbols.

Make a decision before starting

  1. Check whether home washing is permitted.
  2. Check the allowed washing process and temperature.
  3. Read the drying instruction before you wash, so you have somewhere appropriate to dry the item.
  4. Check ironing instructions separately. Do not assume a fabric setting overrides the garment's label.
  5. Follow any extra words about washing separately, trims or other restrictions.

For a second-hand purchase, also look for a cut-out label or any change to the garment. If the care information is missing or the piece is unusually delicate, ask the maker or a suitable cleaner for guidance before experimenting. "I always wash everything the same way" is a risky substitute for knowing the item.

For sellers, include a readable care-label photograph where one is present. It lets a buyer decide whether the garment suits their routine. Do not claim that an item is machine washable when you cannot verify that.

Keep this thread for identifying the information needed to choose a care method. A photograph cannot reliably determine every fibre, dye or treatment.
